2026 Australian Grand Prix Preview: 5 Big Talking Points Heading into the Weekend

Formula 1 is Back!

It’s been 3 months since Lando Norris crossed the Abu Dhabi finish line to become World Champion, and now, Formula 1 is officially back! McLaren enter as Champions, Mercedes enter as favourites, Ferrari have hope, Aston Martin and Williams are playing catch-up, and there are multiple new names that we’ll need to get familiar with as the season progresses! Ford, Audi, and Honda are all now engine suppliers in 2026, whilst Renault are no more as Alpine have switched to Mercedes-powered machinery! Boost, Overtake, Straight, Corner; the list of modes is long, and we can’t forget that DRS no longer exists! Oh, and Cadillac are now here too! So, with all the new rules and regulations, it’s anyone’s game!

New Teams and Drivers

We may as well start getting familiar with F1’s newest names right now given we’re going to hear about them a lot! Firstly, Cadillac have joined Formula 1 as a brand-new 11th team, meaning we now have 22 drivers on this year’s grid (compared to the 20 of recent seasons)! Cadillac are hoping to bring their own kind of flair to the paddock, but whether they’ll be competitive on the track is another thing entirely! Also, both Valtteri Bottas and Sergio Perez are returning to the sport as their drivers, so that’s pretty cool! Next up, we have Audi, a team that has taken over from Kick Sauber after sitting in the background for years! The Audi project has been in the works since 2022, and most of the personnel involved with this team were with them when they were known as Sauber, meaning it’s going to be a lot easier for them to be competitive early on than it will be for Cadillac! However, the one big challenge that Audi will face is the fact that they’ve also developed their own engine, something they’ve never run before! Then there’s Ford, who’ve partnered up with Red Bull Racing to create their own engine, making Red Bull a proper works manufacturer for the first time in their history! Isack Hadjar has also been promoted to the main team; how will the young Frenchman perform in that dreaded second Red Bull seat?! And, as a result of Isack being moved up to the “big leagues”, his spot at Racing Bulls has been taken by our one and only Rookie in this year’s field, Arvid Lindblad! Arvid is a former winner of the Formula Regional Oceania Championship, whilst he’s also a multi-time winner across both FIA Formula 2 and FIA Formula 3! How do the New Rules Work?

This is a very valid question, one that even I’m not fully sure about yet! It’s ironic because, for the most part, I’ve watched Formula 1 a lot longer than most of you who will be reading this, and yet it feels like we’re all learning together! Anyway, the first thing to note is that the cars are both smaller and lighter, which hopefully means we’ll get to see some better racing (although I wouldn’t take that as gospel)! Active Aero is now a thing, with both the front and rear wings changing whenever the drivers enter “Straight Mode”! This means that DRS is no longer able to be used, but that has been replaced by “Overtake Mode”, a button that will give the drivers better opportunities to overtake! However, the big difference with that compared to DRS is that there is only one detection point on each circuit, with the driver being able to use their overtake assist wherever they want over the course of a lap (meaning they could make an overtake into Turn 1 and still deploy extra power for the rest of the lap)! We also have Boost and Recharge Mode to get used to, whilst the start procedure will be slightly different due to the new engines no longer including the MGU-H! It’s going to take us some time to get used to everything, but I honestly don’t care as long as the racing is good!

Aston Martin Are in Shambles!

When I ended 2025 stating that it couldn’t get worse for Aston Martin, I was clearly very much mistake! Their entire pre-season was an absolute mess, with Aston not even recording 400 laps on the board across three different tests, mostly due to the Honda engine always giving out! But it’s not all Honda’s fault, with a clear lack of interaction between Honda and Adrian Newey being apparent, given the fact that the engine x car combo doesn’t work! Then there’s the fact that the car is also really slow, so even if it was reliable, Aston probably wouldn’t even be able to make it out of Q1 (which is unforgivable)! And, to top everything off, both Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll have confirmed that they can only do a certain number of laps so they “don’t risk permanent nerve damage”! So, not only are Aston Martin slow and unreliable, but the car also seems like a bit of a death trap! I’ve seen bad teams in the past, Williams in 2019 and Haas in 2021, especially come to mind, but this is a new level of terrible, especially when you consider that Aston were one of the favourites to win it all when Adrian Newey first signed with them!

Can Oscar Piastri Break the Home Race Curse?

Whilst we absolutely did need to chat about everything new in Formula 1 in 2026, you just knew that I had to bring up home heroes, which leaves us starting with Oscar Piastri! 2025 was such a strong year for Oscar Piastri, with the McLaren driver coming alive, particularly at the start of the year, to prove himself as a Championship contender! Unfortunately (for him), things did go quite wrong for Oscar post-Monza, resulting in him finishing third in the Drivers’ Championship, but he’ll be hoping that what he learned from last year will propel his game even further! However, what I want to talk about is the Australian Home Race Curse, a thing that has lasted for far too long! See, since 1983, no Australian driver has appeared on the Podium at home, a stat that includes the likes of Mark Webber and Daniel Ricciardo (who both competed for Red Bull)! The curse even struck last year, with Oscar Piastri running high up until an unfortunate error resulted in him sliding out of contention! So, with everything that happened last year, could this finally be Oscar Piastri’s Aussie moment?!
