WWE Saturday Night's Main Event Review: 18/07
WWE Women’s Tag Team Championships: Brie Bella and Paige VS Fatal Influence
After Trick Williams defeated Laredo Kid on the Countdown Show, a special edition of Saturday Night’s Main Event, live from Madison Square Garden in New York City, kicked off with Fatal Influence challenging Brie Bella and Paige for the WWE Women’s Tag Team Championships! I wouldn’t say that this was the best opening match, with the chemistry feeling off at parts! That’s basically been the story of Brie Bella and Paige as Tag Team Champions; I really haven’t rated their run at all, and Paige needs to do something different! Thankfully, WWE actually decided to do the right thing here, which was to give Fatal Influence the victory! So, despite the fact that Fallon Henley got busted open, Jacy Jayne’s involvement allowed Lainey Reid to steal the win over Paige, meaning Fatal Influence are your new WWE Women’s Tag Team Champions! What on earth was the ref doing?!

Danhausen VS JD McDonagh: No Disqualification
New York’s favourite son, Danhausen, came out to a great ovation as he was set to take on JD McDonagh in a No Disqualification Match! These are the type of matches you can have on a show like Saturday Night’s Main Event, with JD McDonagh (in particular) being someone who deserves a spot on a big stage! Due to this being a No DQ match, Dominik Mysterio was free to get involved as much as he wanted, with Danhausen eventually getting some backup in the form of the Minihausen’s! However, those guys were basically crash-test dummies as they got destroyed! Danhausen then put his cat into the cloning machine, with the results seeing NBA Champion Karl-Anthony Towns appear and wreck JD and Dom with a pair of excellent Chokeslams (including one to Mysterio through the table)! Danhausen then dropped McDonagh with the DDD to get the win, and overall, this was all very silly (which is a good thing)!
Grade: C+
Bayley VS Lyra Valkyria
After both women cut promos backstage, Lyra Valkyria looked to take all of her anger out as she went one-on-one with her former friend, Bayley! This match definitely didn’t start as planned, with the medical team having to get involved after Bayley wacked Lyra so hard that the Irishwoman was bleeding profusely! However, all this did was just add to the intensity of the matchup, with both women clearly out to prove that they’re two of the best in the game! Despite Bayley winning in the experience department, Valkyria was simply the better wrestler in this match, with The Morgen locking in a vicious-looking submission manoeuvre to choke out The Role Model! After the match was over, Lyra Valkyria continued her assault on Bayley, delivering a Nightwing onto the steel steps to end the segment standing tall! This is how you establish a new star! Also, I’d like to think that Bayley’s coming back, but there was a part of me that viewed this as her final act in WWE; that would be sad!

CM Punk and Cody Rhodes VS Gunther and Sami Zayn
The Main Event match of the night saw CM Punk and Cody Rhodes team up to take on the odd pairing of Gunther and Sami Zayn! The stipulation for this match was simple: a win for the team of Gunther and Zayn would mean that both men would be added to the Undisputed WWE Championship match at Summerslam, making it a Fatal 4-Way! Whilst the idea of that is actually pretty cool, it was fairly obvious that that wasn’t going to happen! The match itself was pretty decent, with the dynamic of Sami and Gunther being interesting, whilst Cody and Punk won’t last as friends for long! Amazingly, Gunther was actually going to win this match, but he got screwed over by Nick Aldis, as the SmackDown General Manager pulled the referee out of the ring before he nailed The Ring General with the Undisputed WWE Championship! This opened the door for CM Punk to pull Cody Rhodes into the cover, meaning the match at Summerslam will remain one-on-one! I’m actually quite intrigued to see Gunther-Aldis at Summerslam!

Roman Reigns and Jalen Brunson Close the Show
The final 25 minutes of July’s edition of Saturday Night’s Main Event were dedicated to Jalen Brunson as the New York Knicks’ MVP was joined by Roman Reigns to receive acknowledgement from the crowd at MSG! I probably would’ve just ignored this segment entirely as it felt more like a PR move than anything to do with wrestling, but in fairness to WWE, I was entertained by Tyrese Haliburton coming out to Seth Rollins’ entrance theme! Seth also then appeared, attacking Roman from behind, but an assist from Brunson allowed Reigns to stand tall with a Spear! The show then ended with Roman Reigns lifting up the NBA Finals Trophy; what a crazy sentence!
