2026/27 Premier League Roundup: Gameweek 5
Manchester City 5-3 Sunderland
Manchester City moved top of the league with a win over Sunderland AFC in an 8-goal thriller! After just 9 minutes, Manchester City already had the lead as Enzo Fernandez scored his first goal for the club from a direct free-kick! However, just 3 minutes later, Sunderland were already back on level terms as Brian Brobbey capped off a well-worked team goal! In the 29th minute, Manchester City found themselves back in front through Rayan Cherki, but just 4 minutes later, it was 2-2 as Brobbey scored again! In the 43rd minute, it was 3-2 to Man City through Antoine Semenyo, before Erling Haaland missed a golden opportunity to add a 6th goal just before halftime! In the 57th minute, Semenyo would score again to make it 4-2, before Brian Brobbey needed just 2 minutes this time to complete his hat-trick! A poor bit of goalkeeping then saw Ruben Dias have to clear the ball off the line, before Erling Haaland finally got his goal to seal all 3 points for City! Overall, Manchester City’s perfect start to the season continues! City now find themselves top of the league, and their first game back after the international break is a big one away at Liverpool! As for Sunderland AFC, you have to feel for Brian Brobbey! The Black Cats stay 14th in the table, and they’ll host Brighton next time out!
Tottenham 2-3 Aston Villa
Aston Villa earned their first victory of the season to sink Tottenham Hotspur to the bottom of the Premier League! Savio had multiple chances to give Tottenham the lead in the first half, but every time he was denied expertly by Zion Suzuki, before Johan Manzambi tapped Aston Villa ahead in the 4th minute of first-half stoppage time! In the 60th minute, Tottenham thought they’d equalised through Mohammed Kudus, but his goal was ruled out for offside, before Nicolas Jackson made it 2-0 in the 67th minute! Emi Buendia would then fire in a third in the 79th minute, before Tottenham finally had their first league goal of the season through Conor Gallagher! Jan Paul van Hecke would then get another one back in the 98th minute, but it was simply too little too late for Spurs! In the end, Tottenham Hotspur’s misery continues! Spurs now find themselves bottom of the league, and they’ll return from the international break with a massive Saturday Night Football clash away at Manchester United! As for Aston Villa, they needed this! Villa rise to 16th in the table, and they’ll host Brentford next time out!
Brighton 3-0 Arsenal
Brighton and Hove Albion celebrated their 125th Anniversary by thumping the reigning Champions Arsenal! After 31 minutes, Brighton found themselves in front as Pascal Gross fired home from long range! Bukayo Saka then missed a good opportunity to equalise just before halftime, before Brighton went down the other end and extended their lead through Charalampos Kostoulas! Another great strike from distance! In the 57th minute, it was 3-0 as Chema Andres headed home from close range, before Pascal Struijk missed a great chance to make it 4-0! Kai Havertz would then find himself in one-on-one with the Goalkeeper, but he failed to beat Bart Verbruggen, before David Raya made a good save to deny Matthew O’Riley! Overall, what a statement victory this is for Brighton and Hove Albion! The Seagulls rise to third place, and their next game takes place at Sunderland in less than 3 weeks’ time! As for Arsenal, they got humbled! The Gunners drop to second in the league, and they’ll have to wait a few weeks before they can attempt to bounce back against Leeds next time out!
Brentford 3-0 Chelsea
Brentford go into the break with all the confidence in the world after a 3-0 thrashing of London Rivals Chelsea! Caoimhin Kelleher made a decent save in the first half to keep Pedro Neto’s effort out, before Brentford found themselves in front in the 61st minute through Jaidon Anthony! Chelsea were then unable to bundle the ball over the line, before Igor Thiago finally got his first goal of the season after following up on the rebound! And then, in the 94th minute, Brentford’s wonderful evening was sealed courtesy of Fabio Carvalho! Overall, what a great night for Brentford! The Bees now find themselves 4th in the league, and their first game back after the international break sees them head to Aston Villa! As for Chelsea, their defence is woeful! The Blues drop to 10th in the table, and they’ll host Bournemouth next time out!
Newcastle 2-1 Hull
After just 3 minutes, Newcastle already found themselves in front courtesy of Joe Willock! In the 7th minute, it was 2-0 to Newcastle as Lewis Hall scored following a wonderful bit of play by Harvey Barnes! Lukas Hornicek then came close to an absolute calamity down at the other end of the pitch, before Newcastle were awarded a penalty after Sorba Thomas tripped Jacob Murphy! What a bizarre incident! Anyway, it wouldn’t end up mattering as Yoane Wissa saw his penalty saved by Konstantinos Tzolakis, before Hull had one back in the 67th minute through Mohamed-Ali Cho! Tim Iroegbunam then had a great chance to equalise for Hull late on, but he failed to keep his effort down! Overall, it’s straight back to winning ways for Newcastle United! The Magpies rise to 9th in the table, and they’ll return in 3 weeks’ time with an away trip to Coventry! As for Hull City, their unbeaten start to the season has finally ended! The Tigers drop to 8th in the league, and they’ll host Everton next time out!
Fulham 1-1 Manchester United
In a game that both teams really needed to win, two scrappy goals meant Fulham and Manchester United had to settle for a share of the points! Lisandro Martinez forced a good save out of Bernd Leno early on, before Bruno Fernandes hit the post! Senne Lammens was then forced into making a good save to deny Sander Berge in the first half, before Matheus Cunha’s deflected effort went out off the post! Lammens was then needed again, this time to deny Josh King, before Fulham were the ones who found themselves in front in the 63rd minute thanks to a ridiculous Lisandro Martinez own goal! Deary, deary me! Bernd Leno then pulled off a great save to deny Bryan Mbeumo, before Manchester United had a point rescued for them in the 89th minute courtesy of a massive deflection following Matheus Cunha’s strike! In the end, Fulham were so close to their first win of the season! The Cottagers stay inside the Relegation Zone (in 19th), and their next game is a must-win away at Ipswich! As for Manchester United, they’re so poor! Funnily enough, United actually rise to 12th in the table, and their first game back following the long international break will be a massive Saturday Night Football clash against Tottenham!
Bournemouth 0-1 Liverpool
Alisson pulled off a really good save to keep Evanilson’s clever finish out, before Dominik Szoboszlai came close with his free-kick effort in the first half! In the second half, Ryan Christie missed a good opportunity to give Bournemouth the lead, before it was Liverpool who found themselves in front in the 57th minute through Alexander Isak! In the end, this performance from AFC Bournemouth simply wasn’t good enough! The Cherries drop to 17th in the table, and they’ll head to Chelsea next time out! As for Liverpool, it’s a win on Andoni Iraola’s return to the Vitality! The Reds rise to 6th in the league, and their first game after the international break is a big Super Sunday clash at home against Manchester City!
Nottingham Forest 0-1 Coventry
At long last, Coventry City finally picked up their first Premier League win in 25 years to stun Nottingham Forest! Dan Ndoye had a decent opportunity in the first half, but he failed to keep his effort down, before Ethan Pinnock pulled off a good block to stop James McAtee from giving Nottingham Forest the lead right at the start of the second half! Then, in the 65th minute, Coventry finally scored their first goal of the season as Jay Dasilva finished brilliantly to put the visitors 1-0 in front! Bobby Thomas then missed a great opportunity to make it 2-0, before Thomas pulled off a great defensive clearance at the other end to deny Igor Jesus! And then, in the 86th minute, Igor Jesus thought he’d equalised for Forest, only for his goal to be ruled out for a pretty questionable foul! What a terrible decision! In the end, Nottingham Forest are going to be fuming! Forest drop to 13th in the table, and their next game sees Oliver Glasner return to Selhurst Park to take on Crystal Palace! As for Coventry City, they finally have lift-off in the Premier League! The Sky Blues remain inside the Relegation Zone (now in 18th, however), and they’ll host Newcastle next time out!
Everton 1-0 Ipswich
Brennan Johnson made a mess of a really good opportunity to score early on, before Everton would find themselves in front inside 11 minutes through Thierno Barry! What a finish! Barry then came close to scoring his and Everton’s second goal of the game, before Leif Davis made an absolute mess of a really good opportunity! In the 58th minute, Everton did have their second goal of the game through Thierno Barry, only for his goal to be ruled out for offside! The goalkeeper was never going to save this, whether Johnson was in the way or not! Things would then get worse for Ipswich as Abdul Fatawu was shown a second yellow card for simulation, before Zian Flemming failed to keep his late effort down! Overall, Everton’s unbeaten start to the season continues! The Toffees rise to 7th in the league, and they’ll head to Hull next time out! As for Ipswich Town, they were simply second-best! The Tractor Boys drop to 11th in the table, and their first game back is an important home game against Fulham!
Leeds 0-0 Crystal Palace
Ao Tanaka failed to keep his first-half effort down, before James Trafford made a decent save to keep Yeremi Pino’s free-kick effort out! Early in the second half, Crystal Palace thought they’d taken the lead through Tyrick Mitchell, but his goal was ultimately ruled out for offside during the build-up! This was an incredibly tight decision! Dominic Calvert-Lewin then had a great chance to give Leeds the lead, but his effort was expertly saved by Walter Benitez, before Daichi Kamada wasn’t a million miles away from winning the game for Palace late! In the end, this will feel like a disappointing draw for Leeds United! The Whites drop to 5th in the league, and their first game back after the international break sees them head to Arsenal! As for Crystal Palace, they’re impossible to predict! The Eagles rise to 15th in the table, and they’ll host Nottingham Forest next time out!
