The most special weekend of any motorsport series takes place in Monte Carlo, and Formula E is no different, with not 1, but 2 Races! But what went down, let’s find out!

A New Championship Leader

With 7 rounds to go, we now have a brand-new Championship leader in the form of Jaguar TCS Racing’s Mitch Evans! What Mitch did perfectly this weekend was stay out of trouble when his Championship Rivals faltered! Only 1 other driver inside the Top 10 in the standings scored points in both Races, and that’s before we even mention the fact that Evans came home P2 and P4, with a Podium finish in Saturday’s E-Prix! Because of all of this, Mitch Evans now finds himself 19 points clear of the chasing pack, and 27 points clear of the guy that he was chasing heading into Monaco! We’ve seen Mitch falter on many occasions in Championship challenges, but could this finally be the year of the Kiwi?!

A Horror Story for Pascal Wehrlein

The brilliance of Pascal Wehrlein is that not only is he super quick, but his consistency is what arguably makes him the best driver in all of Formula E, at least in my opinion! However, all this weekend has been is a disaster as far as the Season 10 World Champion is concerned, with things going badly on Saturday as Wehrlein’s Porsche teammate, Nico Muller, drove into the back of him, resulting in the German suffering a puncture! However, on Sunday, it was a rare occasion where Wehrlein was seemingly just slow, struggling in Qualifying before he ended up just 12th overall! Pascal Wehrlein entered the weekend leading the World Championship, and yet he leaves Monte Carlo 4th in the standings, 27 points off the leader!

Finally Back on Top

On the 15th of May 2022, Nyck de Vries jumped out of his Mercedes as the winner of the Berlin E-Prix, less than a year after he became World Champion around the same circuit! Since then, Nyck has starred as a replacement driver for Williams at the 2022 Italian Grand Prix, only to then have a rather disastrous stint at AlphaTauri in the first half of 2023! De Vries then returned to Formula E for the 2023/24 Season, and to say that it went badly would be an understatement; the Dutchman finished just 18th overall! Season 11 proved to be a lot better, with Nyck scoring 3 Podium finishes on his way to finishing 8th overall, whilst Season 12 had a lot of potential after Mahindra Racing’s impressive performances in Pre-Season Testing! However, whilst the car has been very quick, de Vries has gotten into far too many incidents to keep count of, with him being miles behind teammate Edoardo Mortara in the standings! However, what we saw this weekend, particularly on Saturday, was the best version of Nyck de Vries, with the Season 7 World Champion keeping his cool to take victory around the famous streets of Monte Carlo! Nyck has proven in the past that Monaco is one of his best circuits, so for him to now add an FE victory to his two F2 victories around here is pretty good going! I’m honestly really happy for Nyck de Vries; it’s been a tumultuous last few years for him!

From Pole to Despair… Twice!

We’ve already spoken in the past about the difficulty that Dan Ticktum has faced this season; things really haven’t gone well for Cupra Kiro’s main man, and it’s actually put him in a position where he’s behind his Rookie teammate in the standings! However, the pace that’s clearly always been there came to the forefront in Qualifying yesterday, when Dan took home a pretty special Pole Position! In the Race, Ticktum drove really well, leading for the large majority of the E-Prix, only to lose the lead after staying out for one too many laps! Ticktum then came home on the Podium, but due to contact with Antonio Felix da Costa, the Brit received a time penalty that took him out of the points completely! For me, I’m not sure Dan did much wrong, so I’m not surprised he’s feeling aggrieved! To make up for things, Dan Ticktum took Pole again this morning, earning another 3 points, before he majorly struggled for pace, finishing outside of the points again with yet another penalty! I feel like only Dan Ticktum is capable of finishing outside of the Top 10 twice at Monaco in the same weekend where he’s also taken Pole Position on multiple occasions! Absolutely ridiculous!

Oliver Rowland Returns to Winning Ways

Whilst it has not nearly been as long a gap as it was for Nyck de Vries, it has been nearly a year since Oliver Rowland last appeared on the top step of a Formula E Podium! After winning the World Championship last year, Ollie Rowland has been on a remarkable run of either scoring 0 points or appearing on the Podium! Wouldn’t you know it, that’s exactly what happened this weekend, too! After a disappointing Saturday, Rowland put things right, pulling off a smart Attack Mode strategy that moved his Nissan all the way up out front! To win in Monaco is always special, but Oliver Rowland has now achieved that feat in back-to-back seasons; a brilliant achievement from the reigning World Champion!
